Review

In late 2011 Canon introduced its much-needed replacement for the PowerShot S95: the S100. As good as the S95 was there were some pretty glaring problems that prevented it from being the dominant player in the high-end point-and-shoot sector. Since the idea behind the S100 was for Canon to take the dominant spot just about every feature on the camera was an upgrade over its predecessor. Most of the complaints heard about the S95 were corrected as a result.

For starters, the S100 offers a faster recycle time than the S95. Combined with increased focal length and more zoom, the inadequacies of the S95 as a camera for action shots was resolved, according to Canon. Unfortunately, by adding a 5x zoom lens Canon was forced to reduce the aperture as zoom is reduced. That's a trade-off most casual point-and-shoot users will not mind. The 12.1 mp resolution also ceases to be an issue when you see how bright and vibrant your digital images look.

As for the cameras profile, it was slightly retooled to receive a handy little grip on the front and a rubber thumb pad on the back. It's amazing how the addition of these two small pieces makes the camera so much easier to hold. Through our test we had no problems keeping the S100 in our hands. The shutter button is a bit larger as well, and the menu system has been reorganized to make it easier to operate despite condensing the information into fewer menu entries.

Advantages: redesigned profile for easy grip; 5X zoom lens; on-board GPS; good performance in low light; HD and full HD video.

Disadvantages: narrower aperture; disappointing shutter lag; no hot shoe; washouts in some bright light conditions; a bit more expensive than a point-and-shoot should be.
