Review

When Sony debuted the Cyber-shot DSC-HX30V earlier this year its predecessor, the Cyber-shot HX9V, was already one of the most popular cameras the company had ever put out. They aimed to follow in the footsteps of that success with this new model; a feat the DSC-HX30V easily accomplishes. The DSC-HX30V gets a zoom upgrade from 16x to 20x, along with a wider aperture and no increase in size. That's important in order to keep the camera in the compact class.

As for the picture quality, you get excellent results in all sorts of lighting conditions. We used the camera indoors and out, during the day, evening, and night hours, and under a variety of weather conditions. For a compact ultra zoom we were pleasantly surprised at the results. You're certainly not going to get the pixel sharpness that you will with a DSLR, but it's hard to do better for a compact pocket camera.

Throw in on-board WiFi, GPS, and 1080/60p video and you have a winning combination. About the only complaint we have for this camera is its high price. For the amount of money you're spending you could get an entry-level DSLR from some competitors.

Advantages: 20x zoom lens; very good image quality; good speed; on-board GPS and WiFi; better than average video.

Disadvantages: high price; features can be somewhat confusing; insufficient help menus; clumsy shutter button.
